DOC allows e-bikes on Otago Central Rail Trail

Disabled and able-bodied cyclists will now be able to ride e-bikes on the Otago Central Rail Trail.

The Department of Conservation has changed its local policy over the use of power-assisted cycles – e-bikes – on the Otago Central Rail Trail following consultation with stakeholders.

The feedback was unanimous from the stakeholders, let ebikes under 300 watts use the trail.  “The department supports this change to the local policy and wishes to communicate this to stakeholders and the public.” The review of the policy was the result of a disabled man being informed he could not ride the trail, on a rented e bike.
