Alabama ranked at the bottom of bike-friendly states

Birmingham is already ahead of the rest of the state after unveiling a new bike-share program that will offer rental bikes at special kiosks. 

There will be 40 kiosks downtown and in the surrounding area, and 400 bicycles, including 100 electric pedal bikes. The kiosks and bikes will be supplied by the Canadian company Bewegen.

The League of American Bicyclists each year ranks all 50 states and how “Bike Friendly,” they are.

Alabama ranked 50th on the list, with only the policies and programs sector finishing in the 20-40 percent range of total points. The other categories—Legislation and enforcement, infrastructure and funding, education and encouragement, and evaluating and planning— were all in the bottom 0-20 percent range for Alabama.
